Have you ever struggled to spot a short but important event within a long timeline? We have exciting news for you at WondTech! A new open-source React component called State Explorer has been released, and it solves exactly this problem by providing a zoomable timeline that shows you the whole story while letting you focus on critical moments.

What does this mean for you? If you're a developer working with time-based data – such as service health, build pipelines, or device states – State Explorer will make your life much easier. Imagine an API that was healthy all morning, degraded for just five minutes, then became healthy again. On a chart showing six hours, those critical five minutes can be very easy to skim past. Tables give you exact timestamps, but they don't show you how that incident fits into the rest of the day.

This is where State Explorer comes in. This component combines the best of both worlds. The little window at the bottom keeps the full history in view, while the larger window above shows the detailed view of the time period you select. You can drag the 'blue window' at the bottom to move through time, or resize its edges to zoom into the detail chart above. It feels a lot like sliding a magnifying glass over a timeline, but with handy controls.

The idea for this component dates back to 2015, when its creator worked on an internal Azure project collecting logs, metrics, and errors. The recurring question was: how do you show a full day of history while still letting someone investigate a brief outage? The developer spent a lot of time on this conundrum, even sacrificing a Thanksgiving trip to work on its design. Now, that effort is available to everyone as an open-source component. You can try the live demo to see it in action, by moving the window, resizing it, or even using keyboard controls to navigate. It's a powerful tool that will change how you approach time-based data visualizations.
