Born in 1956, Rob Pike grew up when computers were still room-sized machines. After studying at the University of Toronto and Caltech, he joined the prestigious Bell Labs in 1980. There, he worked alongside legends like Ken Thompson (Unix creator) and Dennis Ritchie (C creator). From day one, Pike's interest lay in operating systems and programming languages.
In 1981, Pike wrote the first window system for Unix, even before Windows or Mac GUI interfaces existed. His work later evolved into the Blit terminal in 1984, which featured overlapping windows.
Pike was part of the team that created the Plan 9 operating system, which took the idea of 'everything is a file' to its extreme. While Plan 9 never went mainstream, its core concepts deeply influenced everything Pike did afterward. These ideas eventually evolved into the popular Go language.
Go's efficient concurrency model (like goroutines and channels) can be traced directly back to Pike's early experiments with languages like Newsqueak in 1989. This means the techniques we use in Go today have roots stretching back nearly 40 years!
As for UTF-8, the universal character encoding system that makes your non-English typing possible on any device, it was born in a single night in 1992. Pike was asked to review a new encoding proposal but found it incomplete. That evening, over dinner at a New Jersey restaurant, he and Ken Thompson designed UTF-8's bit-packing method on a paper placemat.
